Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a turn-based tactical role playing game. The game follows the story of the Netflix series and is set in the world of Thra in an age where gelfling still existed. It is a team-based game, focused on building and leveling up a team of different classes of gelfling, podling, and fizzgigs, where each class has a unique set of abilities.

MY Role

As a senior designer on this project, most of my time was spent creating mission content for the game. With 70 different missions, there was a lot of content to create. One of my tasks was to create the introductory campaign, a set of missions that introduce the player to the world, combined with tutorial elements that teach the player how to play the game.

I was also tasked with overseeing the game’s story. This involved managing an outline of every mission in the campaign and converting the episodic story of the Dark Crystal series into a set of playable combat missions. We also developed a large number of additional missions that explored the world of Thra, telling new original stories, and exploring parts of the world that weren’t visited in the series.

Part of this task required me to design our Campaign Map, a map of the world which the player would navigate to go from one mission to the next.

Creating Lore

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the opportunity to create new lore that added to the world of a beloved IP. I had the chance to work on a series of missions where the player helps the historian Ivo -a new character created for the game – explore a series of ancient coastal ruins. Here, Ivo discovers carvings describing the Great Conjuction, a major astrological event in the world of Thra.
